Linked In Discussion

I get emails, as I'm sure you do as well, from Linked In whenever there are updates or discussions going on.  Every so often I will take a look and see what people are talking about and try to answer or give input wherever I can.  There seems to be the same question that arises every "Update" I get about "How do I get started?" or "How do I get jobs?"  Below is what I wrote to this Linked In Poster named Shannon:

Hi Shannon,

Sounds like you are ready to just dive into some work no matter what it is.  GREAT!  But the question you need to ask yourself is, "What do I really want to be doing?"  This is a pretty hard question.  Especially when you have the skills to do a lot of different things.  But whether these skills relate or not, the truth of the matter is, is that you are just going to be treading water if you don't have a direction.

I strongly suggest looking at what you really want in your career.  Start with the goal and work your way backward.  So...say you want to be a photographer.  What would you specialize in?  I specialize in photographing children and its my goal to be the BEST children's photographer for editorial and advertising clients.  Now that I know what I want, it makes it a whole heck of a lot easier to figure out what to do from there.

For example, My motto is "If you wan to be the best, you need to work for the best!".  So, I set out searching on workbook, blackbook, photoserve etc. to look at work and collected names pf photographers I admired and who were getting the work I wanted to do. I sent emails and made phone calls to assist them in anything and everything that they could possibly need.  Retouching, Assisting, Studio Manager, Production Assistant!  Anything to get me in the door to learn what I could about all aspect of the business and what made them so successful.

The best thing I can say...and I am sure most would say the same thing is to NOT give up.  If you want it and work had for it you will see results.  Its doesn't happen fast but everything you do gets you that much closer!

Hope this helps.  =o)

New Project Coming up!

So...blogging has turned out to be a bit harder than I had thought.  I have always been excited about the idea of keeping a blog but am not sure that I have anything to write that would keep anyone's interest....hmmmm

Well, I guess I can start by telling you that I am working on a personal project that I have been wanting to do for about a year now.  I know, RIGHT!  A whole frickin year!  The reason I haven't done this particular project yet is because it wasnt until recently that I found a source for the materials I needed to build the set.  Several trips, baaaack and fooorth, to pick up the goods I finally have (more than) enough to get started!

And since I know that I am a photographer and not a set builder I found me a very talented set designer who is in the process of building/molding/gluing/cutting/designing this great set!  I am soooo lucky!  I really could not have gotten this far without Atom!

I think that's one of the most important things I have learned.  Yea, I want to do it all and have my hands in every aspect of my shoot but realistically, that's just a recipe for disaster or a whole lotta unwanted and unneeded stress!  If you want the job done right you need to hire the right people for the job.  People who specialize in the craft.  People who have the knowledge you don't and have already made the mistakes.  People who are passionate about what they do.  Besides...I want to be a photographer, not a set designer!  =o)

Anyway!  I'm sure you are just biting your nails waiting in anticipation to know what this project is...guess you will have to stay tuned!  Don't worry, you wont have to wait too long.  I am shooting it in a week and will be posting some pictures and videos.

Hope this has been some sort of interesting!
