Bill Cunningham New York

(picture borrowed from the IFC Website)
I am still blown away…Thursday I met up with Erin for coffee and then we were on our way to the IFC Center to watch the Bill Cunningham Documentary.  (thanks for the recommendation Dana!)

Bill Cunningham is a street photographer who has been documenting the fashion trends in New York for decades.  You get a sense of who Bill is, his love for what he does and the respect others have for him.

What I saw was a person who, without a doubt, sticks to what he believes in.  He just wont do something if  it compromises his self, his beliefs, his intentions for a photograph… I don’t know if we really got 100% of who Bill is but I think people will leave feeling that he is a kind man doing what he loves to do and hasn’t compromised who he is in anyway for it.

Lucky Kids Launch Party!

I was so excited when I learned that Lucky Magazine put out their first issue of Lucky Kids Magazine.  I bought it and ran home to see if I could “friend” them on Facebook!  (Haha!  I know…DORK!)

When I did the search I found that there was an event happening for the launch of the magazine.  Immediately I began texting, calling and emailing people!  I even called the magazine!  I spoke to a sweet woman, Maureen, who told me that the PR department was out of town until Monday for LA Shops.  I left my information  and asked if it were alright if I called back late Monday afternoon if I hadn’t heard back from them.

Friday went by….the weekend too.  FINALLY MONDAY!  I was so excited to open my email and receive that invitation.!  Aaaand nothing.  11am goes by.  Nothing.  I couldn’t wait any longer.  By 1PM I started emailing everyone in PR and Marketing who was listed in the masthead of the magazine telling them my story and how excited I was.

20 minutes later I started to get replies!  I was on the list and attached was my invitation! (YAY!)

Here was my email to them:

Hi _________,

I was extremely excited to discover Lucky Kids Magazine in the magazine store last week!  The guy at the register asked if I was ok when I gasped "No Way!" and then, "I need that!"

I am in NY for a few more weeks from San Francisco and would love the opportunity to attend the Lucky Kids Magazine Launch party this Wednesday at the Stella McCartney boutique.  Is this something I may just show up to or do I need to be on a list?

I specialize in photographing children and, as you can image, I am beside myself excited about the kids version of Lucky

Hope you had a great weekend and thank you for your time.

I was happy that the weather remained somewhat decent enough so that I could wear the dress I wanted to wear and knew was PERFECT for the event.  (dress from www.daniellethedressmaker.com  Yeah, her name is Danielle too!)
I walked in a little after 6 and immediately heard the buzz of excited children!  Making my way through the room I received a few compliments on my dress, had a glass of Champaign in my hand and was offered to sign up for a raffle.   There were juicy juice boxes for the kids, face painting, balloon animals and huge lollipops!  There was even a photobooth set up in the back for the parents and kids to enjoy!
Well dressed moms and dads sat along side the long kids table playing with their kids.  Activities like stickers, play doh, playful animal masks and coloring kept the kids happy and engaged!
It was cute to see the excitement on everyone’s faces.  The new spring line was out and people were buying!  It was cute to see one little girl so happy walking out of the Stella McCartney Boutique with her face painted, her new flower rain coat and her balloon animal.  No doubt the children who attended this event slept well that night.
Thank you, Lucky Magazine, for having me at your event!  Good times!

APANY event at NEO Studios!

When I knew for sure I was going to go to be New York for the month of April I immediately went to Facebook to see if APANY would have anything going on.  I knew there had to be SOMETHING!  As luck would have it, they were producing an event where you were guaranteed 3, 15 minute portfolio reviews at NEO Studios.  PERFECT!  Sign me up, baby!
I had never been to an APANY event so I didn’t know what to expect or if it would be similar to the community APASF exudes.   I received an email with a list of the reviewers.  We got to choose 5 from that list with hopes to have our top 3.  (example: Although it would have been cool to meet with Meg Reinhardt from WWE Magazine I don’t exactly shoot what her magazine would need.)
Onward!  The reviews were from 2-5pm with social networking from 5-8pm.  My first appointment was at 2pm with Trevett McCandliss- Art Director, 9 Threads.  I have to say…I was pretty excited to see him!
In 2008, I went to NY by myself to show my portfolio for the first time.  WHOA!  Talk about a BIG DEAL!  Well, my very first portfolio review in NY was with Trevett McCandliss and Nancy Campbell.  I walked in with my portfolio, sweating…and not just from being nervous but because it was so hot out!  Well, I walked in and Nancy comes up to me, smiling and says, “I want you to know I have agreed to our meeting because I see potential in your work.”

She asked Trevett over and we sat on the couch where they went through every image in my portfolio telling me what worked, what didn’t work and more importantly, why.  They took the time to show me the photographers portfolios they had in their office at the time and gave me the number to one of them, Augustus Butera, to call and have an informational with.

I left feeling really good about where I was going in my photography and more aware of how much more work I needed to do to get there.  For me, having the opportunity to meet with Trevett at this event, 3 years later, wasn’t just to show him my work but also to say THANK YOU in person for being a part of my community who has helped and guided me.
My second meeting (2:30PM) was with Erica Mellow, Art Buyer from SapientNitro.(SapientNitro just sounded cool!) and my third appointment was with Works Artists, David Laidler, Photo Rep (2:45PM)  I had to do my homework on these two before I sent in my request and was  so glad I met them!  They were both also very open and were positive about my work that they both gave me the contact information of someone they knew who they knew would be interested in my work.  Tremendous!
When I was finished with all my appointments at 3PM, I stayed at the event and talked to everyone.  Much like I would at an APASF event.  The community was no different and I felt at home right away.  I had the opportunity to meet APA Directors Jocelyn Zucker who I had been going back and forth in emails about the event, Tony Gale and Theresa Raffetto.
I also had great surprise of seeing a familiar face, Darcy Rogers, who I just learned moved out to NY 2 weeks ago!  So excited for her new adventure out in New York!
Got there at 2PM and left at 8:30PM.  Great event.  I had such a blast!  Thank you APANY.

Im HERE!

IM IN NEW YORK!
I have made a trip to New York every year for the past three years for about a weeks time.  The goal has always been to meet agencies and magazines who have clients with children’s brands.  This trip is no different.  Well, except that I have bought a one way ticket and have sublette a room for the entire month of April!
Today is only day 4.  I am still acclimating to the 3 hour time change but have found some great coffee that is helping me through it!  I have great housemates including a turtle named Lance and 2 dogs, Tate and Jake!

I have had one scheduled meeting so far and it ended up lasting 1.5 hours (had such a great time!) but have met 4 people randomly who are in the industry and we are hanging later in the week.  You never know where, when or how you will meet people.  So far for me it’s been the plane, the nail salon, the subway and the coffee shop!
The first night I was here I bought my unlimited ride subway card and went to meet Noel, Dana and Mary at El Quijote using my handy dandy Hop Stop app.  I HEART you Hop Stop!  After that I was swooped up by my friend Paul, his girlfriend Tonya and his cousin Kia.  After a bunch of squeeling and a few tears from not seeing him is so long we made our way to the East Village for dinner and drinks, then a hurried search for Buttercup Bakery for some yummy cupcakes!  After that we went and did a little site seeing.
Getting back to the apartment was another story....I got lost and my phone died on me.  I ended up just asking a few people where I needed to go and was able to find the apartment.  :o)

Even with that, everything has been great so far.  Thank you all for your calls and emails.  I will be in touch, for sure!  Here are a few images of the view from the roof.  Awesome!

Thanks for looking!
xoxo,

Danielle
